Supported by Slovak Arts Council

Artist in Residence with support from Arts and Theatre Institute, Czech Centre London, and Kunsthalle Praha

Jaro Varga (Czech Republic/Slovakia) is a visual artist and curator who, in his practice seeks to condition the choreography of the visitor’s movement in a well-known space, or initiate the visitor’s translocation into unknown circumstances through fiction. He tries to construct new topographies and engage the visitor in a different understanding of the contexts relating to spaces otherwise fixed in our memory.

During his residency Jaro will continue pursuing his recent interest in how, historically and in the present day, knowledge is created about the universe and our continued failure or inability to discover how things “really are.”

Jaro Varga holds master’s degree and doctorate from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. He has participated in student exchanges at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, the Academy of Fine Arts in Wroclaw and Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in the USA. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad including in recent years, Prague Biennale 6 (2013); When Artists Speak Truth, The 8th Floor, New York (2016); Bucharest Biennale 7 (2016); In Someone’s Else Dream, SODA, Bratislava (2017); Missing Something and Itself Missing, Ivan Gallery, Bucharest (2017); About Books, AlbumArte, Rome (2018); History is His Story, NEST ruimte voor kunst, The Hague (2019). As an artist in residence, Varga has worked at Museums Quartier 21 (Vienna), Futura (Prague), Heppen Transfer (Warsaw), AIR Krems, Center for Art and Architecture ZK/U (Berlin), Triangle Arts Association (New York), and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul).
