What if…sculpture in the city did not mean tons of bronze shaped to commemorate events and figures which are considered important at this particular point in time? Can we imagine art which is not really about how to shape the image of history as exactly as possible, but would rather prise apart the manner in which this image was created, what it renders invisible and pushes to the side of people’s attention? If heritage institutions select artefacts in order to construct an image of history, what is left in their depositories and warehouses? What memory do the objects pushed aside, put away, unclassified, waiting to be giving the status of “worthy of memory” create? Preserved, yet stripped of viability? Sculpture in the City VIII is not about monuments of memory, but rather about their blind spots.
